The notion that it's 5 o'clock somewhere definitely applies to the Beachcomber

Restaurant in Crystal Cove, Calif. They do raise the martini flag at 5 on the dot, but the

atmosphere there is that 5 or not, it's time for a drink, toast, celebration of life!

I started out with a yellow washed panel and then penciled in the umbrellas and the fence.

From there I just fill in with the colors I have mixed on my palette and one of the most difficult things to

decide on is, am I finished? I think the answer is yes, I will live with it for a day or so.

This was our view while sipping martinis from Faneezi's in Provincetown during my birthday weekend. The light was just incredible. The locals seemed to think-"oh yeah, it's like this all the time." But I was snapping away with my camera as the light kept changing.

My daughter attended her final Cotillion dance last Friday and her wonderful Daddy brought her these gorgeous roses. They were so beautiful I knew I had to paint them. On Valentine's Day, I finally had a chance to sit down and paint after I got the kids off to school. I couldn't wait to get started. As I was putting the final touches on the painting, my husband walked in with another dozen red roses and chocolate dipped strawberries for me. What a knight in shining armor he is!

I painted this one night after listening to the news on gay marriages and finding out my friend was diagnosed Bi-Polar. I still smile and sometimes laugh when I look at this one, this is my humor. This is one I painted in a different style than my usual way, it's thin and acrylic. The palette knife strokes are large and smooth. I feel limited with acrylic in not being able to go back and change things. I do think this is a successful painting with its simplicity. Prints are available.

Lake Como, Italy is probably my favorite spot from all of our travels. The vistas are simply breathtaking with the alps in the background, the gorgeous blue of the lake, the brightly colored unique buildings and the lush foliage dotting the magnificent gardens. I love this little laid back town of Varenna, which is so peaceful that all of your cares just melt away.

This is a favorite Valentine's Day painting of mine! If I had a choice, I would be in Paris, in the rain, with my husband, sipping a fabulous red wine and watching the world go by. The city is fabulous but you have to sit back and relax and just soak it in! It's all about romance!

Hi everyone,

I recently took a workshop from Bye Bitney in an attempt to loosen my style up a bit. I would like to have parts of my painting almost have an abstract quality to them and I have always loved brushwork. This is my attempt to loosen up a bit since the workshop.

We worked almost entirely on figures working from models. It was so instructive, hard work and fun! I needed a few days of recuperation from the workshop. It was to bed early for me almost every night.

Continuing with the palette knife vs. brush exercise.

Again, I taped two 6x6 panels side-by-side to a larger panel. Then I sketched the same cow on both panels. This time, however, I started the palette knife painting first followed by the brushes. Also, I gave myself permission to play with the background and change it.

I also started this larger version of yesterday's cow. This one is done on a 24" by 24" Gallery Wrapped Canvas. The canvas was first prepared with modeling paste and orange gessoe. I used to use mainly black and grey gessoe, but now Orange is my color of choice. Holbein makes some really nice colored gessoe.

When first begun there were only a few flowers in the old tin pot. It didn't look right so I simply added more flowers than I actually had. Funny how an idea can be stretched up, down and sideways to make said idea to come out looking pleasing (at least to the painter's eye!). But that's what happened here and the palette knife really allows so much paint and texture. People love to touch these paintings and I encourage them to do so. A nice change from smoother brush or knife work. This 6x8 painting is looking pretty in a soft gold frame and is ready for a new home. Enjoy!

Emerson really knows what I need to hear all winter....patience, summer warmth will come back again. Slow, steady....live in the moment....and day-dreaming is optional!

Lavender thoughts are sustaining me lately - not that this winter has been as harsh as last year. But I do crave those long days of sunshine with flowers tossing their blossoms to and fro. Wafting fragrance and the hum of flower-drunken honey bees.

Keys Creek Lavender Farm (Valley Center, CA) is one of those magical places that will forever have an effect on my painterly life. Being able to spend a few days painting on location locks these wonderful sensory elements into my brain. mmmm, can you feel the sunshine and smell that lofty fragrance???

I had planned to add more detail to the red barn wall in the background, but as I worked, keeping it loose seemed to feel right. I gave it lots of texture and color, which work together to give this tender composition warmth and vibrance.

COWS, COWS AND MORE COWS by OLGA WAGNER

Well, actually it is the same cow done done 2 ways... Yesterday, I was feeling well enough to spend several hours in my studio...And..Wow..I had some serious FUN!

I had this idea to work on the same subject, but in different styles...Those of you who follow my work on a regular basis, know that I love working with palette knives as much as with brushes. I felt it would make for a great exercise to take the same subject on the same size panel and work one with brushes and one with knives and then to compare the end result.

So this is what I did yesterday...

First, I taped two 6x6 panels side-by-side to a larger panel. Then I sketched the same cow on both panels. I started with brushes and completed the cow on the right first...For no particular reason...I grabbed the brush first, so I went with it.. Once done with cow #1, I grabbed a small palette knife and started on cow #2.

I love the end result. I did find that working on a small sized panel, the brush makes life much easier. You have more control to mix the paint right on the panel. I will do this exercise again..Next time I will start with the palette knife and finish with brushes...

So which one of the two is your favorite???

STATE THE KEY COLOR SPOTS SIMPLY
It’s a great way to begin any landscape no matter how detailed you plan to make it. That’s what this painting is all about. It’s a quick study of a landscape showing a hill, trees, distant mountains and wind-swept skies.

IT CREATES A “REALISTIC ABSTRACT”
And that gets you off to a solid start because it perfectly captures the essence of the scene. All work done after this point is merely filling in detail.

DON’T BE TIMID
Be bold. Take a chance and go for it. Using bold descriptive brush strokes and carefully planned color mixtures, I captured the elements of the scene that had caught my eye and inspired me to paint it. This was a demonstration painting during an outdoor workshop I taught for other artists.

SOMETIMES THAT’S ALL IT TAKES
I had planned to paint a great deal more detail, but when I saw the results here I decided I liked it that way and decided not to take it any further. Check out the detail image to see the brush work I used to capture these effects. I was very pleased with the result. I hope you like it too.

HOW TO PAINT COLORFUL GRAYS, COLOR MIXING TIPS by TOM BROWN

I like grays that have color and life to them! These rich grays can bring a painting alive – even one with muted color. And they help establish a particular mood that’s restful and exciting at the same time.

Here’s how I mix these grays. Rather than simply opening a tube of gray I use a wide variety of very subtle hues mixed from the “spectrum” colors on my palette: reds, yellows and blues combined with white. This results in mixtures much more exciting and varied than using a tube of black or gray.

This painting is an example. This 6x8 inch oil painting was done on location (en plein air) as a demonstration for other artists attending a workshop I conducted. It was a gray, rainy day and that was the feeling I wanted to capture in this painting. I liked the quiet moodiness of the day, with stormy skies and muted colors throughout the scene.

It was not easy back then. My Grandaddy grew up on a farm with 9 brothers and sisters and a few of them never made it to their teens. But there was a simple beauty to the lifestyle. I've begun a new series of paintings. These paintings are inspired by this early time and lifestyle, but I can't seem to resist romanticizing the settings.

I loved this week we spent together – the cathartic rhythm of the ocean waves lapping against the shore as dad and I tried to ride each crest as close to the beach as possible, feeling the cool sand squish between my toes and fingers while building sand castles together, and enjoying the peacefulness at sunset as the gorgeous fireball dropped down from the sky and cast diamond-like reflections across the ocean’s surface.

Still fighting a sinus infection and cough...Antibiotics did not seem to resolve the issue..It's getting a bit old!

I managed to rework of of my larger cow paintings. After looking at it, I decided that I really did not like the original background...We artist have the right to change our minds...What worked for us originally, might not work as well after further scrutiny.

Ahh- so much fun painting faces! I threw caution to the wind and decided to use both palette knife and brush on this one. I wanted the lushness of what a knife can bring to the paint, yet a bit more detail where necessary with a brush, without getting too tied to detail.

Glad to be back from a weekend trip to Baltimore to begin settling some family 'stuff'. I'll just leave it at that. It's cutting into my painting time, so I'm having to really concentrate my efforts this week! Got 2 more small landscapes painted today, I'll be posting those soon!

Not one, not two but three waves all lined up to come ashore. I loved the composition of these waves back lit by the morning sun with lots of foam and spray to spare. How lucky could a sea lover get?

This original oil painting depicts my favorite memory of London: the dramatic presence of the Parliament building glowing in the evening rain, in my modern impressionistic palette knife style.

Using wonderful mixtures of greys helps generate quite a glow from the deep golden lights. I love the contrast of warm and cool colors! Winter is here!

FULL MOON, NOCTURNE PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING by TOM BROWN

Most collectors familiar with my work know me for my brush paintings, but I also paint frequently with the palette knife, which provides a very different visual experience. This painting is an 8x10 inch palette knife oil painting entitled “THE MOON AND THE STARS.”

Artists often feel they should limit themselves to just brushes or the knife in order to maintain a consistency of style. Many of the great masters disagree, and so do I.

Richard Schmid is an excellent example. Richard Schmid is one of the most accomplished masters of our time, known best for his masterful use of the brush in both figure painting and landscapes. Interestingly he also endorses and uses the palette knife in his work.

In his book “Richard Schmid Paints The Figure” (published in 1973) he mentions being inspired by one of his heroes, Nicholai Fechin as a master of the knife as well as brushes in his work.

In another of his books “Richard Schmid Paints Landscapes” (published in 1975), Richard admonishes artists to learn to use the knife. He suggests locking away your brushes for a time and painting only with the knife to master this “amazingly versatile instrument.”

More than two decades later in his classic book “Alla Prima – Everything I Know About Painting, by Richard Schmid” he again devotes time to knife painting and describes situations when the knife is the best tool. An example shown in this book is “Cascade Barn” which was painted exclusively with the knife.

Emille Gruppe, another artist whose work I admire, describes how the great Charles Hawthorne forced students to spend time learning how to use the knife exclusively in order to broaden their skills.

I enjoy using both tools. I often use the knife to complete portions of paintings that are primarily done with brushes. And I also create many paintings using only the knife, which creates a very different visual experience than paintings done with brushes.

Plein air Best of Show & acceptance to Salon International

Hi everyone,

I've had a great week, but busy one. I've had two commissions to finish, which should be tomorrow. Today I took some time off to do to a plein air event in Glendale, AZ. The city hosts a one day plein air show. Last night I decided I had better go to it, because they had some good prizes. I painted two paintings, the first in the old town area of a couple of houses. I spent too much time on it and was off a little on the perspective. Time didn't help it. The second one I went out to Saguaro Ranch Park which is an old farm and citrus orchard. There are also various old buildings and farm equipment. I'm always a sucker for old stuff and junk. I found an old tractor and had a great time painting it. I was really fortunate to get Best of Show and win $1000. So, it was a great day!

CAULIFLOWER Palette knife original by Deborah Harold

The subtle colors of this flower vegetable are so fun to paint.

The palette is soft and pastel-like. On a dark purple background

the colors of the cauliflower really pop. The palette knife makes it more loose

than a brush work. Yellow undertones make it feel like it is fresh from the garden!

This was a set-up in Dana Cooper's class at Cannery

Today it was 70 degrees here and I had a beautiful day in Vegas. Wierd January or should I say Junuary weather, so I painted some summer Sunflowers! Global warming?????

Choosing calming greens against a lavender-blue peaceful sky and arranging the two main aspens so that they meet in the middle, suggests a feeling of togetherness. While organizing the outlying trees in a circular pattern and using thick, curving, bold orange brushstrokes, creates a joyful, playful mood.

This is an excellent example. I was interested in the mood here and wanted to capture that as simply as possible, ignoring all unnecessary detail that didn’t contribute to that feeling. I was very pleased with the results. I hope you like it too.

Thanks so much to everyone who sent along a 'welcome back' note! It's great to be painting again. This scene was tricky, mainly because it should have been simpler to puzzle together than I made it. There are many decisions that go into creating a successful image, and sometimes it's easy to get off track with what the goal is. Balance is always the key. I talk about this constantly - the right balance of light-dark; crisp-soft; saturated-subdued; textural-slick; real-abstract; movement-static.... The list can go on and on. I always aim to finish a painting in one go. In so doing, the stopping point can be elusive and very hard to reconcile. For me, this is when things get much deeper than just finishing a decent painting. All kinds of questions and beliefs start swimming in the sea of doubt! I won't go into that right now (if you're an artist, you know what I'm talking about anyway). Learning to let go when the mental chaos starts is a big goal I have for this year.

Each morning when I wake up, I look out my window and think about how different the day is from any other day that I've experienced. It sets the framework for a mindset that is open to new possibilities and adventures. The painting below is from a memory of a special day in Colorado. I simply wanted to capture the nuance of that unique moment in time.

I love the passion and energy in the color red, so I thought it would be fun to play with the still life I had set up of roses and make a painting where red was the dominant color. In person, seeing these roses at life size, I wanted the viewer to be swept up in the movement and emotion of this piece. Utilizing flowing spirals, weaving back and forth, playful thick and thin paint in bold, loose strokes, ruby petals emerging and disappearing, all meant to tease and excite your senses.

I finally made it to the doctor yesterday and got some antibiotics that will hopefully clear up my sinus issues. My 3 week cold is gone, but my right sinuses are totally plugged and causing me issues, such as constant headaches..

Been so long since I last posted that I nearly forgot how to log in. Late last fall I went through a major guilt phase for abandoning my painting - once again; turning to the business of the midlife crisis. Or something there-abouts. Had lots of time to redefine and clarify what makes my life tick in ways that don't interfere with fate. Feeling great these days and much better balanced. Mom had a great experience back up in NY for 6 months and then decided, with our support, that she'd be best off here in Florida. So she returned 2 weeks ago. Last Wednesday marked the first anniversary of my dad's passing. Time has healed us a great deal, and we're able to talk often about what a joy he was without drowning in pools of our own tears, snot and drizzle.

As for my painting, I'm going to pick up where I left off last summer. Figures in stark sunlight, near the water, are still intriguing me and I feel there's more to do. To start off, I'm revisiting the roll of photos that I have from our summer vacation in NC. This scene is from the same swimming hole as in my last post, "Playing on the Rocks". I've dropped the frilly bells and whistles (no bows or petticoats...) and gone straight to the actual scene. Changed the color of the girls' bathing suits, but other than that, it's true to the times.
